Quick Overview:

  1. Avoid using paper when possible.
  2. Get multiple uses out of office supplies.
  3. Keep a close eye on the supply closet.
  4. Plan on getting everyone involved.

PrintingBusiness owners who are interested in reducing supply expenses (while earning points for being environmentally friendly) may be curious or even overwhelmed as to where they should begin when it comes to cutting costs and reducing wear and tear on the environment. Of course, there are multiple areas you could choose to start, but one of the easiest and probably the most manageable of the areas is the supply closet.

By keeping a close eye on your supply inventory as well as ensuring and promoting reuse practices for common office materials (rubber bands and paper for instance), your efforts will go a long ways towards saving you money and you can rest easy knowing you’re doing your part to help the environment.

Fortunately, it doesn’t take much to get started….

  1. Avoid using paper when possible.

Instead of printing or copying everything that lands on your desk or in your inbox, determine if you really need that extra copy. Depending on the document, you probably won’t need an additional copy of that document.  What if you do need to print that document out? Well, you can always use recycled printer paper.

Of course printing documents isn’t the only place you should pay attention to when you’re trying to eliminate or decrease paper usage. Consider reusing non-formal documents to take notes on instead of purchasing overly priced notepads. You’ll get the same effect, be $20 richer, and feel good about it too.

  1. Get multiple uses out of office supplies.

Common office supplies such as binders, paper clips, pens and pencils, and even boxes can be reused. Instead of throwing them away, place them in the inventory closet to be reused again by your staff or yourself.

As far as dishes go in the break room, purchasing bulk paper plates or eating ware can add up over time. Instead, consider visiting your local second hand store or even asking employees to bring their own dishes instead.

  1. Keep a close eye on the supply inventory.

Your staff may regard you as extreme, but carefully monitoring the supply closet will go a long ways towards preventing your money from literally walking off. If your staff do need to use something from the supply cabinet, be sure to emphasize or at least point them in the direction of the items that can be reused (remember how we mentioned putting reusable supplies back in here?).

  1. Business-card-printing-online29Plan on getting everyone involved.

It might be regarded as one of the most boring business meetings since the inception of the business, but by holding a quick meeting on discussing reuse of supplies, everyone will win. You as the business owner/manager will be happy because you don’t have to shell out extra cash to buy unnecessary supplies, the staff or employees will be happy because you’re happy and of course, the environment will be a better place.

By implementing these tips, you should see an increase in the bottom line of your business, and a decrease in your business expenses. Keep the above points in mind the next time you go to print that chain email out…
